Warner Valley Campground
National Park Service - Lassen Volcanic National Park

Click to Locate Warner Valley on an Area MapWarner Valley Campground is located in a remote section of southern Lassen Volcanic National Park.  Access is via County Road 312 (Warner Valley Road) from Chester, California.  The road is paved the first 3/4, then dirt the remainder.  The road is in fair condition with a couple of washboardy parts.  There are some large rocks to be mindful for, but there were many 2WD cars that traveled it.

The campground is set in two loops along Warner Valley Road.  The first loop you encounter parallels the road along Warner Creek.  These sites are perched on bluff overlooking the creek.  The second loop is on a hillside, overlooking the Warner Creek Canyon.  Although the lower loop is prettier, these sites are pretty tightly put together.  The ones up the hill are much better spread apart.

The campground roads are all dirt and require a little attention to negotiate.  There are rocks everywhere.  Each site has a picnic table, bear-proof storage locker and fire pit with a rotating BBQ grill/griddle (for cooking directly over the fire).  There are water spigots throughout the campground for camper's convenience.

The bathrooms have been recently replaced with newer vault style potties.  These are a large improvement over previous facilities and are in excellent conditions.  The privies were clean and well stocked with TP.  These toilets are a pre-assembled unit that are springing up in National Forest and Parks throughout the country.  Can you say 'Government Contract'?

This area is very popular for hiking and backpacking.  There is a trail heading right out of the upper loop that connects to the Pacific Crest Trail.  From here you can connect into many other National Park trails.  You could hike all the way to the top of Lassen Peak from here, if you were so inclined...and could handle such a difficult jaunt.

The nearest community for supplies is Chester (approx. 15 miles away), along the shore of Lake Almanor.  Here you can find a gas, restaurants, grocery store, hardware, etc.  The nearest full service communities are Susanville (approx. 40 miles) or Red Bluff (approx. 75 miles). Reviewed 08/2005.
